Have you ever stared at a store shelf lined with rows of colorful toothpaste boxes and been amazed at just how many there are? With so many of them claiming to freshen breath and fight plaque even better than the last, it can be an overwhelming task to find the one that’s right for you. But don’t just grab a random toothpaste off the shelf! Certain ones can target specific dental issues and help your brushing become even more effective. Here are some different types of toothpastes and how they can help you get the happy, healthy smile you deserve!

Toothpaste for Sensitive Teeth

Having sensitive teeth can make everyday tasks like eating, drinking, and brushing your teeth unpleasant. Toothpastes that are designed with this in mind use microscopic compounds to cover up exposed tubes in your enamel or desensitize the nerve endings they contain. Not only does this let you comfortably brush your teeth, but it can also help them become less sensitive over time.

Herbal Toothpaste

Herbal based toothpastes are another great option for those with sensitive teeth or who simply don’t like the idea of chemicals in their toothpaste. These are created with a combination of natural ingredients and a small amount of fluoride in order to be as organic and environmentally friendly as possible. Options without fluoride are available as well, but they’re not recommended since they fluoride is an essential ingredient for protecting teeth from decay.

Whitening Toothpaste

While whitening toothpastes won’t give you the same dazzling results as other teeth whitening treatments, they can help you brighten your smile. Overtime, they can lift some of the surface stains on your teeth and let your natural pearly whites can shine through. However, the chemical abrasives used to do this can be painful for those with delicate teeth or gum issues.

Whitening toothpastes for smokers target the stubborn discoloration that smoking and tobacco products cause. Since they contain even stronger chemical abrasives, excessive use may damage your enamel. Be sure to only use toothbrushes with soft bristles and remember to brush gently.

Tarter Control Toothpaste

Tarter forms when plaque builds up and hardens on your teeth. This tough substance causes discoloration and can only be fully removed by your dentist. Tarter control toothpaste uses certain compounds to prevent plaque from mineralizing, keeping tarter from forming in the first place. While it can be a useful tool for your oral health, it’s not a replacement for cleaning out plaque with routine brushing and flossing habits!

You don’t have to wait to see your dentist for a regular checkup to benefit from a personalized cleaning treatment. Head over to your local grocery store and pick up a specialized toothpaste that can give you the help you need and the beautiful, healthy smile you want!
