When you think of dental hygiene, what comes to mind? For many, it’s brushing their teeth and visiting their dentist every six months for a checkup and cleaning. While those are definitely important, being mindful of what you eat is also crucial. Therefore, in addition to cutting back on sugar, make sure to fill your plate with the top mouth-healthy foods that benefit your oral health. Keep reading to learn what they are!

#1. Crunchy Fruits & Veggies

Do you love a satisfying crunch? You’re in luck! Crisp apples, fresh celery, and raw carrots are just a few nutrient-dense foods that are great for your oral health. In addition to encouraging saliva production (which helps fight cavities), fruits and veggies like these scrape leftover food particles and bacteria from your teeth. Not to mention that many of them are a great source of fiber, vitamin C, and vitamin A, and make a great side for any meal or can be enjoyed on their own.

#2. Dairy Products

Dairy products, like yogurt and cheese, are one of your mouth’s favorite foods. Their calcium-rich makeup helps promote strong enamel and can even protect your teeth from harmful acid and bacteria. Plus, white dairy products, like milk, can help keep your teeth free of dental discoloration, preserving your bright, white smile.

#3. Lean Proteins

Fish, poultry, and other lean proteins are high in phosphorous, which helps keep your teeth healthy. Even non-meat alternatives, like tofu, are a great choice as well! Other protein-rich snacks, like almonds, are ideal since they are low in sugar and an excellent source of calcium.

#4. Unsweetened Tea

Did you know that black and green teas have plaque-fighting ingredients? It’s true! Therefore, starting your day off with a cup of tea can help keep your teeth and gums in pristine condition. Just make sure to be cautious of how much sugar is included and use a straw to prevent stubborn stains from developing.

To keep your smile in tip-top shape, think of your diet as a part of your oral hygiene routine. Incorporating the above foods and beverages is a great place to start!
