After nearly two years of dealing with the pandemic, you’ve decided it’s time to see family and friends and have some fun. You can’t wait for the holidays to get here so you can celebrate with those you love most. However, if you are in the middle of Invisalign treatment, this time could complicate your treatment if you aren’t careful. Here are four actions you can take to stay on course and straighten your smile through the holiday season.
Wear Your Aligners
You may be on holiday, but your smile isn’t! This may seem like a no-brainer, but you still need to have your aligners in your mouth for 20 to 22 hours every day, even though you may be eating more often. Otherwise, they can’t shift your teeth. As a result, you could fall behind in your treatment plan.
Take Aligners Out When You Eat or Drink
If you’ve worn Invisalign for any amount of time, you know you’re supposed to remove your aligners when you eat. When you’re on vacation, you may think you can relax the rules a bit; however, this is one rule you need to follow. The clear plastic was not designed to withstand chewing forces, and your aligners can become scratched, discolored, or damaged if you eat with them in, potentially lengthening your treatment. For the same reason, you need to take them out if you are drinking anything other than water. Especially hot beverages can warp the plastic and get you off track with treatment.
Take Your Aligner Case with You
Maybe when you were a kid, you saw people sifting through the trash looking for their lost retainers. The same can unfortunately happen with your clear aligners. Going out of town for the holidays? Make sure your aligner case is on your packing list. Even if you’re only going out to a party or a restaurant, take the case along with you so that you are less likely to lose or misplace your aligners.
Brush and Floss After Meals or Snacks
Before you put your aligners back into position, you must brush and floss your teeth. Not only can bits of food get stuck between your teeth, but they can also allow plaque to form, increasing your risk of cavities. Plus, food debris could change how your aligners fit on your teeth and potentially shift your smile in an unexpected and unwanted way.
In the end, you should enjoy yourself and love spending quality time with loved ones. However, if you don’t spare a thought for your Invisalign treatment, you could get off track. By follow these steps while you’re celebrating, you can have peace of mind about your smile.
